What is Expungement?

Expungement is the legal process to remove a criminal or traffic case from your record. In the state of Maryland, except in rare circumstances, your case is available to the public. The Maryland Court operates a website to look up criminal records in Maryland called “Case Search“.

Maryland law allows for some types of cases to be removed from public view. This is called expungement. Steps

Step 1: Consultation

Step 2: Review

An attorney will review your record and determine if a case or cases are eligible for expungement. This review is done before any payment to ensure your case(s) are eligible for expungement.

Step 3: Filing

After paying the fee, the attorney representing you will complete the required paperwork for you to sign. The attorney will file the paperwork and handle correspondence with the Court. If successful, you can expect your case(s) to be expunged in approximately six months.

Who Am I?

Overview

I (Matthew Stubenberg) graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2013 and was admitted to the Maryland Bar in the same year. Since then I have worked tirelessly to expand access to expungement.

I’ve worked for Maryland Legal Aid, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS), Harvard Law School’s Access to Justice Lab, and the University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law. In all of these positions I have worked on all aspects of the expungement process.

I now have my own law firm in Maryland handling expungement matters.
